OUR HORSES

This video was created to honour the memory of dear Gracie. Unfortunately, terrible acts of cruelty like this are happening right now in our own neighbourhoods. All too often, as in this case, people get away with abuse and neglect without charges ever being laid.

Gracie's Story

Gracie was rescued from a farm in Norfolk County on August 28, 2009. The original call came into the OSPCA stating there was a dead foal in the field. Unfortunately, it was too late for Gracie's young daughter.

In addition to Gracie, 6 other horses were in desperate need of immediate and urgent care. They were all brought to Whispering Hearts Horse Rescue so we could try to save them. Gracie survived for 4 days with us, but sadly it was too late for her.

Gracie was so emaciated that her muscle was too far gone. She was eating and drinking well, but once she felt comfortable in her cozy stall, she laid down. That was the end for sweet Gracie. She simply did not have enough muscle mass or strength to get back up. We tried for many hours to save her. But, it was too late.

Gracie was laid to rest in my arms peacefully with dignity and in comfort. She will forever be in our hearts as she gave the ultimate sacrifice, the death of her filly, and then her own life.

Her sacrifice saved the other 14 horses that were on that same farm.

Rest in peace dear Gracie. You deserved so much better.

Don't let the suffering and death of Grace and her filly be in vain. In their memory, you can do something to help other horses avoid their fate:

  • Watch the video and then share it with your friends via email, Facebook, Twitter and other social media;
  • Make a donation so we can continue to provide care to horses who need our help;
  • Sponsor a horse so we can provide a safe long term home to a horse in need;
  • Adopt a horse to give it a forever, loving home and make space here for another rescue.

No charges were laid against the people whose neglect caused the painful deaths of Gracie and her foal. The authorities responsible for overseeing the welfare of animals - governments, law enforcement agencies, and the OSPCA - need to step up, be accountable and take action to stop what is happening to far too many horses.

The horses need you to help us speak for the ones who can't speak for themselves. Add your voice to ours. Together, we CAN make a difference ~ one horse at a time.

Once a horse has physically recovered and completed our mandatory training program, he or she is ready to be adopted. This is where you come in. Not only are you giving one special horse a new lease on life - you also help us make space for another horse in need.

We will disclose all and any information we have on your horse. We will do everything in our power to ensure the horse is a suitable match to your capabilities and expectations. Our goal is to send every horse off to their forever home.

But, it doesn't end with us delivering your horse. We will follow up to see how you are coping. We may schedule a follow up visit. We are here to answer your post-adoption questions or address your concerns. And, we hope to receive periodic updates from you.

Please know: We will assist you if needed. For new horse owners or inexperienced riders, lessons with the potential adoptive horse can be arranged at WHHR to ensure you are ready to take your horse home.

 We do receive multiple applications for some of our horses and while we do not adopt on a first come first serve basis, we do adopt to the first suitable home available. If you want the best chance to meet the horse of your first choice, it's important that you get your application submitted at the earliest opportunity.

When you see a horse on the Whispering Hearts Horse Rescue website that you think would be a good fit for you, the first step is to check out The Adoption Process, our Horses Waiting for Adoption and submit an Adoption Application. You may have questions about the horse but please be assured that there is no commitment to adopt by either yourself or the rescue until all your questions have been answered, you have met and spent some time with the horse, and it is mutually agreed that the horse is a good choice for your situation.

Even if you don't see a horse in our listing of Adoptable Horses that matches what you're looking for, we encourage you to submit an Adoption Application. Horses become available for adoption as their health and training improves. If we feel that one of those horses would be a good choice for you based on your Adoption Application, we will contact you to arrange a meeting.

Are you ready to make a new life long friend?

Then, let's proceed:

Horses waiting for adoption

Many of the healthy horses living at Whispering Hearts are ready for their forever homes. For every horse that is adopted, a space is made available for us to help another horse in need.

The mission of our Adoption Program is to ensure that you will be able to meet the needs of the specific horse and that the horse will also meet your experience and goals.

Please note: While we try to update this page regularly, daily chores and activities here at the rescue often don't allow us to spend much time at the computer. We are actively working on adding more of our amazing horses to this page! We also have many companion horses available for adoption that are not currently listed.

Please complete our Adoption Application, this will help us track adoptees. We will contact you as soon as we can once your application is received.

Horses not yet available for adoption

While many of the horses here can be considered healthy now, they may not have completed our Training Program and/or need a bit more time to sort out individual issues.

Please be patient with us as we try to update profiles and photographs.

HORSE PRAYER

Don't cry for the horses, that life has set free - A million white horses forever to be.
Don't cry for the horses, now in God's hands - As they dance and they prance to a heavenly band

They were ours as a gift, but never to keep - As they close their eyes , forever to sleep
Their spirits unbound, on silver wings they fly - A million white horses, against the blue sky

Look up into heaven, you'll see them above - The horses we lost, the horses we loved
Manes and tails flowing, they gallop through time - They were never yours, they were never mine

Don't cry for the horses, they will be back someday - When our time has come,
They will show us the way.

Do you hear that soft nicker, close to your ear?
Don't cry for the horses - Love the ones that are here.
