ABOUT WHHR

I have always had a passion for horses, even as a child. When I was 10 years old I used to help out at a local riding stable all day to have the opportunity to ride for one hour at the end of the day. At age 14 I worked at a riding facility as the lead for trail rides and any other chores that were needed. I would spend my summers and weekends there. I did this for about 3 years.

I had always wanted a horse of my own and at 28 I purchased my first horse, Sabrina, an Arabian mare that I still own. I have owned her for 18 years and I am the only person who has ever ridden her. I love her dearly.

I became a member of the Dunnville Humane Society Board and held the positions of Director of Investigations and Director of Foster Parenting. These were volunteer positions as Haldimand County did not have Humane Society services at that time, only animal control.

brendaIn 2001 when Welland Humane Society was finally contracted to provide animal control and animal cruelty services for Haldimand County, I began employment with Welland to provide animal control and cruelty services in the County. I obtained my official Agent status through the OSPSA which provided me the authority to conduct cruelty investigations and I also was an animal control officer.

Upon leaving the Welland Humane Society to seek employment with Haldimand County Administration, I became a board member on the Welland Humane Society Board of Director - a position I held for a year.

Prior to the establishment of Whispering Hearts Horse Rescue, I rescued 2 to 4 horses a year which quickly became 4 to 6. I began to realize the great need for horse rescue as cruelty to horses is not as recognized as is with the more domestic breeds such as cats and dogs. I realized we needed an advocate to educate the public and provide a service to the public to help prevent horses from being subjected to auctions and even worse, slaughter. I needed a bigger farm.

I found the farm in Hagersville in the summer of 2007 and began to bring this dream to reality. We moved in December 2007 and the work began. We now have a 48 acre farm with a newer barn and arena. The main herd has a 23 acre paddock. We built a few smaller paddocks to house horses that need more hands on care. We have also added to the barn to accommodate more horses there. We are still building more paddocks and hope to have more separate paddocks built in 2013, however this all comes with a price tag.

This provides us the ability to issue tax receipts for donations we receive.

This was a 7 month process with a lot of balance and checks and we are so proud to now be registered!

Our CRA Registration number is 832175582 RR001

We are proud and grateful to be among the 2015 Mayor's Gala Recipients, chosen from organizations across Canada.

The fourth annual Mayor’s Charity Gala will take place May 23 at the Cayuga arena, and tickets are on sale now for $120 per person. About 500 tickets will be sold.

In 2013, Bruce Agra Dehy Inc. teamed up with the Ontario Equestrian Federation to help with the rehabilitation of a herd of neglected horses that had been surrendered to Whispering Hearts Horse Rescue in Hagersville, ON.

When Bruce Agra Dehy Inc. learned of the plight of the severely malnourished horses, the company immediately sprang into action to help the rescue facility save the animals.

Bruce Agra Dehy Inc. agreed to feed the 12 surrendered horses for three months, but substantially increased their donation to care for the entire Whispering Hearts herd after visiting the facility and seeing first-hand the wonderful work done there.

They provided the company’s high quality forage cubes for all 64 horses at the rescue facility so that they had the chance to thrive and go on to lead meaningful lives.

Bruce Agra Dehy and OEF continue to support the horses at Whispering Hearts Horse Rescue. Since that first donation in 2013, close to 5,000 bags have been shipped to the rescue facility.

“The hay cubes have been amazing! The horses that arrived the same day the product did were severely emaciated and had terrible coats. Within four weeks their coats improved drastically and they had gained an average of 90 lbs. This was quicker than any other recovery we have done. I truly believe in this product. Our herd has also done amazingly well. Their coats just gleam! I love this product and will continue to use it.” – Brenda Thompson, Owner/Operator of Whispering Hearts Horse Rescue

"Hi Brenda and Dave!! - I just wanted to send you an update on the ponies! Rhett Butler is doing extremely well and I have included some of his best pictures. He is my most reliable lesson pony and a barn favourite. I use him for Jamie who is an advanced little hunter rider and he is kind enough to take my 7 year old nephew Johnny for a ride every Friday for his western lessons. I will get picks of him and Johnny soon. It's the cutest thing you have ever seen! He will do any thing for food including getting his whiskers trimmed (he was pretty nervous at first!) 2 weeks ago he went to his first off property show and although he didn't trailer perfectly he was an angel upon arrival. We love him to pieces!"

"Hi Brenda - Thanks for replying. I saw your cause on the news this morning and may I say Bless your heart for opening your farm to these horses. Thanks again." - Maureen

"Buddy who we call phantom (he needs a mask to cover his one eye, like the phantom of the ophera) spent 1 month at northstar and is currently in Cayuaga at TPS farm (the gentleman that trailers us). He is doing very well with my other babies, I have determined that I need the round pen to work with him best and he seems to agree. He is very kind and truly wants to be a good boy; he is just nervous. I am in no hurry to use him so for now, he is just getting fat and being a horse; I hope to bring him back in may once I am done school and can spend all the time with him he needs. Phantom is a sucky boy and has completely stolen my heart. I know he will be a fantastic pony very shortly; he just needs to take it all in baby steps.

We have our Whispering Hearts calender up at Northstar and I promise to visit soon. Thank you again so much for saving these 2 wonderful ponies. They are very much loved and appreciated. - Harlee"

"Hi Brenda, Just wanted to drop a line and tell you how glad we are to be a part of the rescue. We have always loved animals. What you are doing is wonderful. Anyone who talks to you knows right away you are very sincere. You come alive talking about your horses!!! We just love coming there and helping and spending time with the horses.

Sometimes, when I go, I think I have a favourite - but then I meet another and think "Oops! I think I love them all!" I have always wanted a horse of my own. But this is better... I have them all! Once again, thanks for letting Del and I share your dream!"

"Thank you for your good work. Thank goodness there are people like you... keep it up!"

At Whispering Hearts Horse Rescue, we don't just heal the horses physically; we also heal them emotionally.

People often ask, "How do you work with all of these abused and untrained horses?" The Chris Irwin Method of Horsemanship has provided us with the tools to reach deep into the souls of these horses, and the knowledge to work through the fear and trust issues many of them have developed due to human injustice and ignorance. In 2012, Brenda achieved the Silver Level of Certification in Chris' Train the Trainer program. She trains all of the volunteers at WHHR to handle the horses with these techniques. Whenever you are with a horse, you are training him or her.

img 3123Education is a key part of the work we do at WHHR to make life better for all horses. So, we host Confident Horsemanship clinics taught by Anne Gage 3 - 4 times a year. These clinics are open to volunteers, adopters, potential adopters and horse owners. Participants can bring their own horses or work with a WHHR horse.

Please visit www.AnneGage.com to learn more about Confident Horsemanship and this horse friendly method of training.
