It's been just over two months, and Big Red doesn't even look like the same horse.

"He had the worst case of hoof neglect I've ever seen," said Brenda Thompson, who has been running Whispering Hearts Horse Rescue in Hagersville with her husband Dave since 2007.

Big Red couldn't even stand when he first arrived; his hooves were in such poor shape. He was also severely underweight.

A herd of horses has been rescued from a farm in eastern Ontario.

Among the nine horses and one donkey rescued was Halo Slew. Based on her background, the odds were against her ever ending up the victim of neglect. Halo’s granddad was Seattle Slew. He was a Triple Crown winner and widely considered to be one of the top ten race horses ever.

It's not exactly a case of the rescuer needing to be rescued. But it's close.

Whispering Hearts Horse Rescue, a 20-hectare equine rehabilitation farm for abused and neglected animals, is facing its toughest year yet.

Fallout from the racehorse industry decline means a deluge of discarded horses needing help. That same explosion of castaway animals has flooded the marketplace and it's harder than ever to find adoptive homes for their rehabilitated horses. And on top of that, there's a severe hay shortage and prices have skyrocketed.
